Famous tourist resorts across Jammu and Kashmir, especially Gulmarg and Pahalgam, are witnessing a massive influx of tourists amid the scorching heatwave sweeping the country. While temperatures across most weather stations in the Kashmir Valley have risen, they remain significantly cooler compared to other parts of the country.
In particular, temperatures in Gulmarg and Pahalgam have stayed relatively low, drawing large numbers of tourists to these hill stations.
India is currently experiencing an intense heatwave over the past few weeks, forcing people to seek refuge in cooler destinations such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir.
Mostly tourists from hotter regions like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, New Delhi, and Punjab are heading to Kashmir to spend a few days, especially since educational institutions have announced early summer breaks this year.
The unprecedented surge in temperatures is attributed to the super El Niño effect, which is likely to continue for a few more months.
The national capital, New Delhi, saw temperatures climbing to 45 degrees Celsius in the past two weeks, with similar conditions prevailing across most north Indian states.
However, Punjab and Haryana have witnessed rainfall spells in the past week, bringing much-needed respite from the heatwave.
It is pertinent to mention that despite last year’s terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people, it has failed to deter tourists, with higher numbers being recorded in the region this season.
