Traders, students, and NGO members staged a protest at Ghanta Ghar, Lal Chowk, in Srinagar on Sunday, condemning the recent terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives, including 25 Indian nationals and one Nepalese citizen.
Protester Imran Khan expressed confidence that justice would be delivered to the victims. He also referred to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent ‘Mann Ki Baat’ address, in which the PM assured compensation for the victims and vowed that those responsible would be punished.
“We condemn the tragic incident in Pahalgam. We believe justice will be served. PM Modi has assured compensation and promised that revenge will be taken soon. This is our Kashmir, and tourism here will flourish once again," Khan further added.
Another protester emphasised the need to send a strong message against terrorism. “We want to show that Kashmir valley stands firmly against terrorism and will always welcome tourists with open arms,” he said, underlining the role of tourism in the region's economy and identity.
Meanwhile, five days after the attack, signs of resilience and hope have emerged in the valley. Tourist footfall, which had plummeted from 5,000–7,000 visitors daily to just 50–100, is slowly recovering. On Sunday, tourists from Croatia and Serbia were seen exploring Pahalgam, praising the region’s natural beauty and the warmth of its people.
