After the collapse of a section of the Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi district last year, the Uttarakhand government has started working on creating a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for building tunnels in the future.
Vinod Kumar Suman, the Secretary of Disaster Management and Rehabilitation, shared this update during a virtual meeting on Thursday. The government is gathering input from major organisations, including the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), and Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL).
District officials asked to provide suggestions
During the meeting, Suman also asked district magistrates to share their recommendations for the new SOPs. This initiative aims to prevent incidents like the Silkyara collapse from happening again.
The Silkyara tunnel collapse on November 12, 2024, made national headlines. A section of the under-construction Silkyara Bend-Barkot tunnel gave way, trapping 41 workers inside. Thankfully, all of them were rescued after a major operation. The tunnel, once completed, will connect National Highway 134 in Uttarkashi.
Cold wave preparedness
In addition to tunnel safety, Suman asked district magistrates to send proposals for any funds needed to tackle cold waves. He emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety and comfort of pilgrims traveling for the winter Char Dham Yatra.
Officials were instructed to monitor weather reports and road conditions in the hilly areas. Pilgrims should only be allowed to continue their journeys if the roads are safe. In case of roadblocks due to snowfall, arrangements must be made for pilgrims to stay at secure locations.
Suman also highlighted the need to strengthen community radio systems, which are crucial for communication in the challenging terrain of the hills.
By taking these measures, the Uttarakhand government aims to enhance safety and preparedness for future challenges.
