A two-day training program was conducted for medical officers and staff from all 14 jails in Himachal Pradesh to improve healthcare services in prisons.

The programme aimed to enhance the skills of medical personnel in identifying and treating infectious diseases among inmates.

The training was organised in partnership with the Hindustan Latex Family Planning Promotion Trust (HLFPPT) and focused on educating doctors, pharmacists, and lab technicians about the screening, treatment, and prevention of diseases such as HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), tuberculosis (TB), and hepatitis.

Rajeev Kumar, Project Director of the State AIDS Control Society, Himachal Pradesh, stressed the importance of early detection and timely treatment of infections in prisons.

He explained that with proper medical care, these diseases can be effectively managed and even cured. He also spoke about the '95-95-95' initiative, a global effort adopted by India and the United Nations to end AIDS by 2030.

This initiative aims to ensure that 95 per cent of people living with HIV are aware of their status, 95 per cent of those diagnosed receive treatment, and 95 per cent of those on treatment achieve viral suppression, meaning the virus becomes undetectable in their bodies.

He mentioned that regular health check-ups are already being conducted in prisons and urged officials to strictly follow these screenings to ensure that every inmate receives proper medical care.
