An earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck Afghanistan on Saturday at around 8:24 am, while moderate-intensity tremors were felt in Jammu and Kashmir.
Although the intensity and duration of the quake lasted for "4-8 seconds", there were no reports of any damage.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the quake occurred at a depth of 190 kilometres in the Zaybak area of the Badakhshan region of Afghanistan.
An EMSC spokesperson said the epicentre of the quake was recorded at 36.5536°N / 70.9259°E. The spokesperson said the energy released by the earthquake was 2 × 10^12 joules.
Earlier on April 4, a quake measuring 5.8 killed eight members of the same family when their home collapsed in the Gosfand Dara area of Kabul province.
The 5.8-magnitude quake struck at 8:42 pm local time (16:12 GMT) on Friday, April 4, at a depth of 186 km (115 miles).
The US Geological Survey (USGS) said the epicentre was in the northeastern province of Badakhshan. The capital Kabul is about 290 km (180 miles) southwest of the epicentre.
The tremors from that quake were felt across Pakistan and parts of Jammu and Kashmir.
Afghanistan witnessed one of the deadliest earthquakes in recent history in August 2025, which killed around 2,200 people.
