The Central Government today said that a big change has been seen in the demography of the Santhal Pargana region of Jharkhand bordering West Bengal over the past few decades.
In an affidavit filed at the Jharkhand High Court on the matter of Bangladeshi infiltration in the State, the Centre said that the number of tribals has decreased rapidly in the last decade.
According to the Central government, the population of tribals in Santhal Pargana was 44% in 1951, which has now decreased to 28%.
It has further been said that Santhal Pargana has not only witnessed infiltration but also conversion and migration. It told the High Court that the people from outside were coming to Santhal.
It said that a large number of tribal lands are being usurped through gift deeds violating the existing land laws.
It has been said in the affidavit that in the last few days, the number of madrasas in Santhal has also increased a lot. Most of the madrasas have been built in the border districts of Sahibganj and Pakur.
The Central government has stated the need to implement NRC here, looking at the entire situation of Santhal. It has also been informed that the government has ways to identify the infiltrators and send them back, but this is not possible without implementing NRC.
Apart from the Union Home Ministry the UIDAI has also filed its reply on behalf of the Center. The UIDAI said that Aadhaar can never be the basis of citizenship. It is valid only as a unique identification.
