A tribal woman who had gone missing on Monday afternoon was found dead near a field in the Dewandighi police station area on Tuesday morning, triggering serious allegations of gang rape and murder. Police have arrested two individuals in connection with the case and launched a detailed investigation.

According to police sources, the arrested accused have been identified as Azizul Sheikh and Bhadai Sheikh. A case (No. 142/2026, dated 07.07.2026) has been registered at Dewandighi police station under Sections 103(1), 238, and 70(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which pertain to murder, destruction of evidence, and gang rape.

The accused were produced before the Bardhaman District Court on Wednesday, which remanded them to three days of police custody to facilitate further investigation.

Police officials stated that the exact cause of death and the validity of the allegations would be determined based on the post-mortem report, forensic findings, and other evidence. A team of forensic experts visited the crime scene on Tuesday, collected samples, and conducted a detailed inspection. Investigators are currently analysing the evidence and awaiting the post-mortem report.

The deceased woman’s family has alleged that she was raped and murdered. They claimed that there were injury marks on multiple parts of her body, including the neck. Recounting the events leading up to the incident, the victim’s husband stated that he, his wife, and one of the accused had been drinking alcohol together on Monday afternoon. He said that he later stepped out of the house, and when his wife woke up and could not find him, she went out in search of him but never returned.

“After searching throughout the night, her body was found near a field not far from our home on Tuesday morning,” the husband said.

Meanwhile, the victim’s brother has raised suspicions regarding the role of Azizul, alleging that the accused had gone missing from the area after the incident. The family has demanded a thorough and impartial investigation to identify all those responsible and ensure strict legal action.

Police recovered the body from an area adjacent to farmland and sent it to Bardhaman Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination.
