A 40-year-old tribal woman was allegedly raped by a group of robbers who broke into her house in Madhya Pradesh’s Alirajpur district, police said on Saturday. The incident took place on Friday night in a village under the Bori police station area, where five to six men reportedly entered the woman’s home.
Police said two of the intruders sexually assaulted her during the attack. The woman sustained serious injuries and was later referred to a hospital in Indore for treatment.
Superintendent of Police Raghuvansh Kumar Singh said preliminary findings indicate that the woman suffered severe internal injuries, which have been confirmed by doctors. He added that evidence has been collected from the scene, though details have not been disclosed as the investigation is ongoing.
Police said the assailants also looted silver ornaments and a mobile phone before fleeing. “Prima facie, it appears the accused entered the house with the intent to commit robbery, though all angles are being examined,” Singh said, adding that efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the suspects.
The incident has triggered political reactions, with Congress leaders demanding a high-level probe. Vikrant Bhuria, MLA from Jhabua and head of the party’s tribal wing, visited the survivor at the Indore hospital. Citing doctors, he said the woman had undergone surgery and was in recovery.
Bhuria termed the incident “shameful” and raised concerns over the safety of women, particularly from tribal communities, in the state. He urged Chief Minister Mohan Yadav to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case and ensure strict action against those responsible. He also called for financial assistance for the survivor, noting that she had already lost her husband.
