Assam resonated with the melodies of Bhupen Hazarika on his 98th birth anniversary on Sunday, as tributes poured in across the state.

Special programmes were held to honour the legendary musician, whose compositions continue to touch hearts.

Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya paid homage on X, stating, “Like the ever-flowing waters of the Burhaluit, may the words of love, unity and harmony of Sudhakanth echo in the hearts of every Assamese.”

Hazarika, often called ‘Sudhakanth’ or the melodious voice, was revered for his musical contributions.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also expressed his respect on social media.

“The music of Dr Bhupen Hazarika transcends all barriers! His songs radiate the message of justice, harmony and brotherhood. Today on his Jayanti, we pay homage to the Bard of Brahmaputra,” he wrote.

The Assam government organised a cultural programme at the Samadhi Kshetra in Jalukbari, where Assam Cultural Affairs Minister Bimal Borah offered floral tributes.

The Bhupen Hazarika Sangaskritik Nyas arranged a special event featuring 99 flags hoisted by prominent figures, alongside performances of Hazarika’s songs.

Education Minister Ranoj Pegu also participated, urging attendees to embody the principles of brotherhood and harmony championed by Hazarika.

Events to celebrate Hazarika’s legacy were held throughout Assam, marking his 98th birth anniversary with a blend of reverence and celebration.

Bhupen Hazarika (1926-2011), renowned as the Bard of the Brahmaputra, was a towering figure in Indian music and culture. This title, inspired by the river flowing through Assam, reflects his deep connection to the region.

Hazarika was not only a legendary singer, lyricist, and music composer but also a scholar, artist, and humanist with a vision of a classless society. Despite his fluency in Hindi and English, he composed over 800 songs in Assamese, his native language.

Hazarika's lyrical prowess spanned a wide array of themes, from nature and history to politics and visionary ideals. His music conveyed a universal message of inclusivity and hope, touching the lives of many who listened.

Though his influence is profound among Assamese speakers, a significant portion of his work remains lesser known to non-Assamese audiences. It was only in his later years that English translations of his songs began to surface, expanding his impact to a broader audience.

Hazarika's songs continue to inspire, embodying a timeless vision of unity and humanism.
