Tripura Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen died on Friday at a private hospital in Bengaluru, where he had been undergoing treatment after suffering a massive cerebral stroke. He was 72.
A senior BJP leader and sitting MLA from Dharmanagar in North Tripura, Sen had been airlifted to the southern city for specialised medical care following the stroke, officials said in Agartala.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled the death of the Speaker, recalling his role in the state’s development. “Pained by the passing of Shri Biswa Bandhu Sen Ji, Speaker of the Tripura Assembly. He will be remembered for his efforts to boost Tripura’s progress and commitment to numerous social causes. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this sad hour. Om Shanti,” the Prime Minister said on X.

Chief Minister Manik Saha described Sen’s death as a major loss. “I am deeply shocked. The passing away of the Speaker is an irreparable loss to the party. I conveyed my deep condolences to the bereaved family and his followers,” the Chief Minister wrote on Facebook.
The Tripura government announced a three-day state mourning from Friday as a mark of respect, according to a notification issued by the General Administration (Political) department.
All government offices, institutions, schools, colleges and other educational establishments remained closed on Friday. Officials said Sen’s mortal remains would be brought back to Tripura on Saturday. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
