Tripura moved to significantly expand its higher education landscape, with the State Cabinet approving proposals to upgrade the Tripura Institute of Technology (TIT) and Tripura Women’s College into full-fledged state universities. The decision positions the two institutions as key pillars in the state’s drive to widen technical and general higher education access.
The decision was cleared during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Manik Saha, Tripura Cabinet Spokesperson and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said. With these additions, Tripura will now have three state-run universities. At present, Maharaja Bir Bikram University is the only institution established and operated by the state government, while Tripura University functions under the Union Ministry of Education.
Chowdhury said the Council of Ministers had approved the conversion of TIT into a full-fledged technical university. “The Council of Ministers has approved a proposal for converting TIT as a full-fledged technical varsity. All the polytechnic colleges of the state will be governed by it once all the procedures are over,” he said.
The Cabinet also endorsed a proposal to elevate Tripura Women’s College in Agartala into a government-run state university. “The cabinet has approved the upgrade of Women’s College into Women’s University. The move will certainly boost the higher education ecosystem in the northeastern state that reflects the government’s commitment,” he stated.

He added that 28 posts of ICDS supervisors would be recruited through the Tripura Civil Service Commission.
The Cabinet further approved 14 new technical posts, spanning civil, electrical, mechanical and public health engineering, under the Urban Development Department.
In another decision aimed at strengthening grassroots social and educational infrastructure, the state will set up 119 new anganwadi centres to support child care and early learning.
