The Tripura government has extended Wi-Fi facilities to 30 government colleges across the state as part of its drive to create a digitally empowered society in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India vision.
Chief Minister Manik Saha launched Wi-Fi connectivity in 11 more government colleges under the second phase of the project on Tuesday. With this expansion, all 30 state-run colleges are now equipped with high-speed internet for educational use.
Speaking at the event, Saha said technology should be used for the welfare and development of society, adding that the state is intensifying efforts to build a smart and digital Tripura to ensure ease of living for citizens.
“The Prime Minister has given special importance to technology. The youth community, which makes up about 60–65 per cent of India’s total population, will play a special role in realising the dream of a Viksit Bharat by 2047,” Saha said.
He noted that Tripura was recently declared the third fully literate state in India, after Goa and Mizoram, based on UNESCO guidelines. The Chief Minister added that with Wi-Fi available in all government colleges, students will no longer need to spend their own money on internet access.

Alongside the Wi-Fi initiative, the government launched the Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogayog Yojana for the 2024–25 academic year, which provides ₹5,000 each to final-year students for purchasing smartphones.
Saha said the scheme will help bridge the digital divide and encourage students to make productive use of technology. “Technology must always be used for positive purposes. It is crucial for advancing education, healthcare, and agriculture,” he added.
The Chief Minister, a dental surgeon himself, also highlighted how Artificial Intelligence is transforming multiple sectors, from medical services to social media platforms.
The state government has allotted space to private telecom operators for setting up new data centres, and plans are underway to install additional mobile towers in remote areas to improve connectivity.
Finance and IT Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, Higher Education Minister Kishore Barman, and IT Department Secretary Kiran Gitte were also present at the launch event.
