Tripura has completed full electrification of its 271-kilometre railway corridor from Churaibari in the north to Sabroom in the south, paving the way for the introduction of electric MEMU train services aimed at improving regional connectivity and commuter efficiency.
The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has indicated that MEMU services are likely to be rolled out by June 2026, initially on the Agartala–Dharmanagar and Agartala–Sabroom routes. Designed for short-distance travel, the trains are expected to benefit daily commuters, including office-goers, students, and traders, with faster acceleration, reduced travel time and lower operational costs.
The electrification work was executed by the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL), which has made traction substations operational in Unakoti, Khowai and Gomati districts to ensure uninterrupted power supply for train operations. Railway officials said multiple successful trial runs of electric locomotives have already confirmed system readiness.

Officials added that the shift from diesel to electric traction is expected to significantly reduce emissions, aligning with broader sustainability goals. MEMU trains will also enhance accessibility by allowing more stoppages at smaller stations and semi-urban areas across the state.
Final safety inspections, signalling upgrades and operational clearances are currently underway, with authorities expressing confidence that passenger services will begin within weeks.
The development places Tripura among the leading northeastern states to achieve complete railway electrification, signalling a shift towards faster, cleaner and more efficient rail transport in the region.
