Tripura’s Director General of Police (DGP), Anurag Dhankar, on Tuesday claimed that the law and order situation in the northeastern state has improved, citing an 8–10 per cent decline in the crime rate so far this year compared to 2024.
The remarks came a day after Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president Asish Kumar Saha alleged that the state’s law and order situation was deteriorating. Saha had sought the DGP’s intervention following what he described as a series of attacks on party MLAs, leaders and workers.
Dhankar, however, asserted that key indicators pointed to an overall improvement. “The crime rate has been reduced by 8–10 per cent in Tripura this year compared to the previous year,” he told reporters following a law and order review meeting with the Khowai district police authorities.
He also noted a substantial drop in road accident fatalities. “There had been 126 deaths reported due to road accidents till June 2024. This year, the figure has come down to 88 deaths, reflecting a gradual improvement,” he said.
Road accidents are a persistent concern in Tripura, but police data show a 30 per cent reduction in fatal incidents in 2025 so far, compared to the same period last year.
Dhankar also highlighted progress in the state’s anti-drug operations. “The amount of seizure of contraband items has increased to ₹20.20 crore till June this year, up from ₹18 crore last year,” he said.
Describing the overall situation as positive, the DGP added, “The figures show that the law and order situation appears good, with law enforcement agencies trying to improve the situation further.”
On Monday, TPCC chief Saha had visited police headquarters to raise concerns directly with the DGP, urging action to restore public confidence amid ongoing political tensions.
