Tripura has emerged as a national frontrunner in empowering women through Self-Help Groups (SHGs), recording strong performance in livelihood settlement and credit linkage under the Rural Self Employment Training Institutes, according to official data.
As per findings from the National Annual Report, the state has achieved an 85 per cent livelihood settlement rate, placing it among the top three states in the country. The metric reflects the proportion of trained SHG members who have successfully transitioned into sustainable income-generating activities after completing skill development programmes.
Officials said the achievement signals the effectiveness of Tripura’s approach in linking training with practical livelihood opportunities. The model relies on coordinated efforts between training institutes, financial institutions and local administrative mechanisms to ensure that beneficiaries are not only trained but also supported in setting up viable economic activities.

The success has been particularly visible among rural women, many of whom are increasingly turning to entrepreneurship for financial independence. SHG members across the state have taken up activities in sectors such as agriculture, tailoring, food processing and other small-scale enterprises, contributing to household incomes and local economies.
In addition to livelihood outcomes, Tripura has also made notable gains in financial inclusion. The state has recorded a 54 per cent credit linkage rate, securing the fifth position nationally. This indicates improved access to institutional finance for SHG members, enabling them to expand operations, invest in productive assets and stabilise income streams.
Officials pointed out that access to credit remains a crucial component in sustaining livelihoods, as it allows beneficiaries to scale up their enterprises beyond subsistence levels. The steady rise in credit linkage suggests growing trust between SHGs and banking institutions, as well as improved financial literacy among rural communities.
