Twenty female students from Bodhjungh Girls Higher Secondary School in Agartala were hospitalised on Thursday after experiencing severe stomach aches, suspected to be due to food poisoning.

The students, who reside at the Maharaja Bir Bikram Welfare Society hostel, complained of discomfort shortly after arriving at school following breakfast. The meal reportedly consisted of dal and rice.

Mita Das, a teacher at the school, recounted the incident saying, "After the prayer, when the girls entered the classroom, some of them complained of stomach aches. We don't know what happened as they stay in the hostel. Some fainted, so we called an ambulance and rushed them to the hospital. Around 12 students were affected."

One of the students described their symptoms claiming, "When we came to school, our stomachs started aching, and we felt uncomfortable and started vomiting. We had breakfast at the hostel before coming to school."

Following the incident, teachers swiftly transported the affected students to GB Pant Hospital for treatment.

Kanak Chowdhury, Deputy Medical Superintendent of GB Pant Hospital, provided an update stating, "The girl students from Maharaja Bir Bikram Welfare Society at Indranagar in Agartala suddenly fell ill at school. Most likely, it's food poisoning. They are all stable. Around 20 students came in, and some left after preliminary treatment. We have provided them with saline and medicines. They are scared as they are away from their parents. The Medical Superintendent also visited. We suspect food poisoning, and the changing weather might have contributed."

Authorities are investigating the incident to determine the exact cause of the illness.
