In a wave of violence following the death of 21-year-old Parameshwar Reang on July 12 at GBP Hospital, Agartala, over 300 people have been left homeless in Tripura.
The state, preparing for Panchayat elections on August 8, is now grappling with the aftermath of this unrest.
Residents expressed their frustration during the visit of Social Welfare Minister Tinku Roy to Gandatwisa.
The aggrieved villagers criticised the minister, demanding immediate action against the perpetrators, compensation, and shelter.
Angered by the perceived inaction of the police and authorities, locals raided the office of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), causing significant damage.
A viral video on social media shows youths questioning the minister about the 11 scheduled weddings postponed due to the arson and chaos.
The mob's attack on the SDM office, where distressed locals sought shelter, further escalated the tension. Stones were hurled, leading to widespread disorder across the state.
Criticism of the government came swiftly. On Monday, Congress denounced the current administration, accusing it of allowing democracy to be "murdered" in broad daylight.
"This is the real 'Samvidhan Hatya'," said in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh on X (formerly Twitter). He further claimed the violence was orchestrated by the "self-styled double engine government."
Parameshwar Reang, who died from injuries sustained in a fight with a local from another community, was initially admitted to Gandatwisa Hospital before being transferred to GBP Hospital, where he succumbed last Friday.
The incident has sparked demands for swift justice and better protection for residents as the state heads towards a crucial electoral period.
