Tripura is reeling under severe flooding, described as the worst in three decades, with heavy rainfall inundating large swathes of the state.
TIPRA Motha chief, Pradyot Debbarma, raised the alarm, calling the situation "very grave" as villages are submerged and thousands are forced to seek refuge in makeshift camps.
Debbarma highlighted the dire conditions, pointing out that roads have been severed and landslides have compounded the disaster.
"The situation is critical; many villages are affected, and people are living in temporary shelters. Infrastructure is heavily damaged, isolating numerous communities," he said.
The TIPRA Motha leader urged the central government to intervene immediately, seeking assistance from both the state government and the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
The torrential rains have left a trail of destruction, with local dams at risk, which could have severe implications for neighbouring Bangladesh, Debbarma warned.
The Youth Tipra Federation (YTF) volunteers have been lauded for their efforts in providing aid, despite many of them facing personal losses due to the floods.
"All scheduled programs have been cancelled due to the crisis," Debbarma stated, highlighting the gravity of the situation.
As the floodwaters continue to rise, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has reached out to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for urgent support.
CM Saha briefed Shah on the deteriorating conditions and requested additional National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams to enhance the ongoing relief efforts.
"Spoke to Hon'ble Union Home Minister, Shri @AmitShah Ji, and briefed him on the severe flood situation. I requested the immediate deployment of additional NDRF teams," Saha posted on social media platform X.
The chief minister expressed his gratitude for the prompt assurance of support from the Home Minister, noting that the state is in desperate need of assistance.
Meanwhile, the Assam Rifles have launched relief and rescue operations in East Kanchanbari of Unakoti district and Karbook and Amarpur of Gomati district.
Two columns, consisting of 2 officers, 4 JCOs, and 70 soldiers, were deployed on the night of August 20, following a requisition from the civil administration in response to the escalating crisis.
