Tripura's 34-year-old Bapi Debnath, fondly known as Neel, has scripted history by becoming the third Indian cyclist and the eighth globally to reach the South Base Camp of Mount Everest on a bicycle.

Neel's remarkable journey, completed in 54 days. A cinematographer and editor residing in Kolkata, Neel originally hails from Chandrapur in Agartala and is an alumnus of Umakanta Academy School in Tripura.

Starting his expedition on May 21, 2024, from Kolkata with his single-gear cycle, Neel meticulously charted a route that included significant landmarks such as Varanasi, Ayodhya, Saloni Border, Kathmandu, Gurmi, and Namche Bazaar, ultimately reaching the South Base Camp on July 14.

Reflecting on his journey, Neel shared, "I dedicated this journey to my father and started without the thought of setting any records.

The realisation of my achievement only came when officials at various checkpoints acknowledged my efforts."

Neel's journey was fraught with challenges, navigating treacherous roads and managing with minimal gear—a toolkit, spare tyre, and cycle spokes.

His experiences were diverse and enriching.

"I mostly camped in my tent, cooking boiled food to avoid digestion issues caused by the weather," he said.

"In India, temples and roadside dhabas became my refuge, while in Kathmandu, the locals at Ram Mandir offered crucial support," he added.

The expedition saw Neel navigating through tough terrains with minimal resources, highlighting his resourcefulness and determination.

His return to Tengboche on July 15 marked the end of an extraordinary journey and the beginning of a new chapter in cycling history.
