The Uttarakhand government has taken the murder case of Tripura student Angel Chakma, son of a Border Security Force (BSF) Constable, “very seriously,” the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) said in a statement on Sunday.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said such incidents are “completely unacceptable” in the state and that the government will deal strictly with anti-social elements. “Those involved in such crimes will not be spared,” he said.
According to the CMO, five accused have been detained so far in connection with the murder of Angel Chakma, a student and resident of Nandanagar in Tripura’s Unakoti district. Three — Avinash Negi, Suraj Khawas and Sumit — were sent to jail, while two juveniles were sent to a correctional home.” One of the accused, who is originally from Nepal, is absconding and a manhunt has been launched. A reward of Rs 25,000 has been announced for any information leading to his arrest.
The Chief Minister has directed the police to ensure that the absconding accused is arrested at the earliest. He said the accused would soon be taken into police custody.
Dhami further warned that those who “play with law and order should not expect any leniency” from the government and said such anti-social elements would not be spared at any cost.
He also reaffirmed, as per the CMO, that the state government is fully committed to ensuring the safety of every citizen living in Uttarakhand.
Dhami expressed condolences over the death of the student from Tripura. A murder charge has now been added to the case.
Meanwhile, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Saturday said he spoke with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami regarding the tragic death of the student in Dehradun.
In a post on X, CM Saha said he spoke with Dhami about the incident involving Angel Chakma, a resident of Nandanagar, Debram Thakur Para, who was brutally assaulted by a group of miscreants in Dehradun on December 9 and later died at Graphic Era Hospital.
CM Saha said that during the conversation, Dhami informed him that five accused had already been arrested in the case. He added that further investigation is underway and assured that justice would be delivered.
What happened?
A 24-year-old MBA student from Tripura died after a racist attack in Dehradun. Victim Angel Chakma succumbed to his injuries on Friday (December 26) after battling for his life for over two weeks. The incident had triggered widespread outrage across Tripura and several northeastern states.
Angel Chakma was stabbed and suffered critical injuries after he and his younger brother, Michael Chakma, were attacked by a group of men in what is being described as a racially motivated assault. The incident took place at a local market in the Selaqui area of Dehradun, under the jurisdiction of the Premnagar police station. Friends and witnesses said the attackers hurled racial slurs at the brothers and repeatedly called them “Chinese”.
Michael told the police that his brother responded calmly but firmly to the taunts, saying, “We are not Chinese. We are Indians. What certificate should we show to prove that?”
