Tripura will conduct its three-tier Gram Panchayat elections on August 8, with vote counting scheduled for August 12, as announced by State Election Commissioner (SEC) Saradindu Chaudhuri on Wednesday.
Candidates have been notified to file their nominations by July 18, with scrutiny occurring the following day.
The withdrawal deadline for nominations is set for July 22.
This election will cover 6,370 Gram Panchayat seats, 423 seats in 35 Panchayat Samitis, and 116 seats in eight Zilla Parishads.
A total of 12,94,060 voters are registered, including 6,58,589 males and 6,35,460 females.
In the previous Gram Panchayat elections in 2019, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 86 percent of the seats uncontested.
The counting process was marred by clashes between Congress and BJP supporters in Kailasahar, Unakoti district. The BJP eventually swept the contested seats.
Opposition parties, including the CPI (M) and Congress, accused the BJP of using violence and intimidation to prevent them from fielding candidates.
The BJP refuted these claims, arguing that the opposition had lost its support base and was unable to find candidates.
An official from the State Election Commission mentioned a pending case related to village committee elections in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC).
The High Court is expected to deliver a verdict soon, after which the election process will proceed.
