The Tripura cabinet has approved the implementation of the Centre’s “Nari Adalat” scheme on a pilot basis in 10 gram panchayats across the state, along with clearing a series of recruitment and welfare measures, Transport and Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said on Thursday.

Briefing reporters after a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Manik Saha, Chowdhury said the Nari Adalat scheme, launched by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, would be rolled out in selected panchayats across eight districts.

“A new scheme called Nari Adalat will be launched in the state as a pilot project in 10 panchayats as per the direction of the Centre,” he said.

The identified panchayats are Fulbari in North Tripura, Srirampur in Unakoti, West Sonatala in Khowai, Lembucherra in West Tripura, Khedabari in Sepahijala, Tepania in Gomati, Vivekananda Palli in South Tripura, and Singanala, Halahali and North Halahali in Dhalai district.

According to the minister, each panchayat-level body will have no more than nine members comprising socially recognised persons. These panels will adjudicate matters related to atrocities against women and may suggest police action where necessary.

He said the bodies would function as arbitration forums to provide a platform for women hesitant to approach law enforcement agencies directly.

The cabinet also approved guidelines to provide coaching support to Tripura domiciled graduates preparing for national-level competitive examinations conducted by UPSC, SSC, RRB and IBPS. Coaching centres will be set up at Bir Chandra State Central Library in Agartala, Netaji Subhash Mahavidyalaya in Udaipur and Government Degree College in Ambassa, each with an intake capacity of 100 candidates selected through a screening test.

In addition, the cabinet approved an increase in daily stipends for Scheduled Caste hostel boarders from Rs 80 to Rs 100, benefiting 712 students across 54 hostels.

The government also cleared recruitment of 32 junior drivers in the Health and Family Welfare Department and 16 posts, including revenue inspectors and assistant survey officers, through the Tripura Public Service Commission, in accordance with reservation norms.
