At least 12 people sustained injuries when an Air India flight from Phuket to Delhi experienced mid-air turbulence on Tuesday. The turbulence is said to have occurred around 10.30 am before the aircraft entered Indian airspace.
Air India said its flight AI2379, operating from Phuket to Delhi with around 125 passengers took off at 8.27 am from Phuket and landed at Delhi's T3 at 11.07 am experienced a brief in-flight turbulence-related event approximately 300 feet in altitude during cruise, resulting in a momentary change in altitude. A transient technical fault is suspected. The aircraft landed safely in Delhi, and all passengers and crew safely disembarked.
The airline reported a severe injury to one cabin crew member, injury to another and minor injuries to a few passengers due to the sudden loss of altitude. A transient technical fault is suspected. According to Pilot-in-Command, 10 passengers and two cabin crew members were injured, with one person reported to be seriously hurt.
The aircraft later landed safely at Delhi's IGIA. Aviation regulator Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is probing the incident.
Passengers and crew members with minor injuries requiring medical assessment have been taken to a medical facility at the airport for precautionary examination and care by Air India's airport team and medical personnel. The crew member who suffered a major injury was shifted to a hospital.
