The Madras High Court has allowed an urgent mention made by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party seeking a suo motu cognisance into the stampede that took place in Karur District of Tamil Nadu during a political rally organised and headed by Actor Vijay on Saturday.
Justice Dhandapani accepted the urgent application made by the party's legal counsel. It is expected that the case will be heard on Monday at the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court. Notably, the High Court is currently shut for the week due to the Puja holidays.
The party alleges a conspiracy surrounding the incident and is seeking either a suo motu investigation or a probe conducted by an independent agency or the CBI.
TVK's lawyer, Arivazhagan, has said that the party has approached the court with a petition that urges the court to set up a Special Investigation Team or to transfer the case to the central agency, that is, Central Bureau of Investigation. Arivazhagan trashed the state government's contentions that safety guidelines were violated at the Karur rally.
Meanwhile, Vijay on Sunday announced a compensation of ₹20 lakh for the families of each of the 40 people killed in a stampede at his rally in Tamil Nadu's Karur last evening. The TVK chief said his party will also give ₹2 lakh each to the nearly 100 injured in the tragedy.
In a social media post through his party's official handle on X, the 51-year-old actor-politician said he is overwhelmed by grief. "I am at a loss for words to express the pain my heart endures. My eyes and mind are clouded with sorrow. The faces of all of you whom I have met keep flashing through my mind. The more I think of my loved ones who show affection and care, the more my heart slips further from its place," he said.
Earlier, the MK Stalin-led DMK government in Tamil Nadu announced a compensation of ₹10 lakh for the dead and ₹1 lakh for the injured. Prime Minister Narendra has announced a compensation of ₹2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund for the next of kin of each victim of the tragedy. The injured would be given ₹50,000, the Prime Minister's Office has said.
The TVK has been holding political gatherings across various parts of Tamil Nadu every weekend as part of its campaigning for the upcoming assembly elections.
