Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on Friday formally announced actor-politician Vijay as its chief ministerial candidate in the upcoming 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Addressing a committee meeting, Vijay categorically stated that the party would never form an alliance with the BJP, "not openly, not even in secret."

Vijay categorically dismissed any possibility of joining hands with what he termed "ideological foes," declaring that the BJP "can sow seeds of poison elsewhere, but not in Tamil Nadu." He, further, said: "One cannot resist or insult Anna and Periyar and win in Tamil Nadu. TVK is not Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam or All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam." He also went on to claim that TVK would always resist both DMK and BJP.

Reports claim that the party authorised Vijay to take decisions regarding alliances before the polls. The TVK is focusing on increasing its membership base, with an aim of registering two crore members in the state. To reach the masses, Vijay will go on a statewide tour in Tamil Nadu this year between September and December, meeting voters and mobilising support.

TVK's second state conference will take place in August, where additional strategies are going to be revealed. In addition to electoral strategies, the party adopted several resolutions related to important matters.

TVK called on the Centre to reclaim the Katchatheevu island and condemned what it described as an effort to conceal the findings at Keezhadi, which it said established a Tamil civilisation spanning over 2000 years.

It denounced the Union government and BJP for the treatment of the farmers during the Delhi protests, and called on the Tamil Nadu state government to withdraw the planned Melma SIPCOT industrial expansion scheme.

TVK also pledged to wage a struggle for mango growers of Krishnagiri, Theni, Thiruvallur, Salem, and Dindigul, stating that simply letters from Chief Minister MK Stalin to the Union government were not enough.
