In a move aimed at consolidating its political position in Tamil Nadu, the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has invited parties supporting its government to a crucial meeting scheduled for July 1.

According to sources, Chief Minister Joseph Vijay is set to hold discussions with leaders of allied parties, including the Congress, the Communist parties, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK). The meeting is expected to focus on the formation of a new alliance under the leadership of TVK.

Key issues likely to be discussed include the structure of the proposed coalition, its leadership, the alliance's name and the appointment of coordinators from each participating party. Policy-level deliberations are also expected on major issues affecting the state, such as the Cauvery and Mekedatu disputes and the two-language policy.

The development follows TVK's strong performance in the recently concluded Assembly elections, where it emerged as the single largest party by winning 107 seats, defying political expectations and dealing a major setback to both the DMK and AIADMK alliances.

Despite its impressive tally, TVK fell short of the majority mark and subsequently formed the government with the support of parties that were previously part of the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance, including the Congress, the Communist parties, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the IUML. Cabinet positions were allocated to several of these allies, excluding the Communist parties.

With nearly 50 days having passed since the formation of the government, all supporting parties have now distanced themselves from the DMK alliance. Reports suggest that TVK has begun laying the groundwork to formalise a new political front under its own leadership.

While parties such as the CPI(M) and CPI have maintained that their support for the TVK government was aimed at preventing the imposition of President's Rule and countering the BJP, DMK leaders have publicly criticised them for backing the new administration and accepting Cabinet positions.

Amid this evolving political landscape, TVK has initiated efforts to strengthen ties with its allies. On Sunday, Ministers N. Anand and Aadhav Arjuna met VCK leader Thirumavalavan in Chennai's Meenambakkam area to extend formal invitations for the July 1 meeting.

The discussions are expected to explore the possibility of a united political front focused on safeguarding Tamil Nadu's interests while preparing for the upcoming Assembly by-elections, local body elections and the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

If a consensus is reached on key issues such as leadership, alliance structure and policy direction, the proposed coalition is expected to remain intact through future electoral cycles, including the 2031 Assembly elections.
