Adhava Arjuna, General Secretary of Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) and President of the Basketball Federation of India, arrived in Dehradun on Saturday. He is attending the National Sub-Junior Basketball Tournament even as a case has been filed against him over a controversial social media post linked to the Karur stampede.
When asked about the stampede, Arjuna said, “We are working for justice. The truth will come out.”
His visit comes at a time when a case has been registered against him for a post on X. The post allegedly called for a Nepal and Sri Lanka-like uprising in Tamil Nadu against the ruling government.
The screenshot of Arjuna’s post is still circulating online even though he deleted it after backlash. The post was made soon after the Karur stampede on September 27, in which 41 people lost their lives.
In that post, the TVK leader had urged Tamil Nadu’s youth to “revolt” against authority.
According to police, Arjuna has been booked under Sections 192, 196(1)(b), 197(1)(d), 353(1)(b), and 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Meanwhile, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has rejected the anticipatory bail petitions of TVK General Secretary Anand and Joint Secretary C.T.R. Nirmalkumar. Their petitions were filed in connection with the Karur stampede case.
The stampede took place on September 27 during a public rally led by TVK chief and actor Vijay. The tragedy killed 41 people and left many others injured. Preliminary reports pointed to lapses in crowd management as the main cause.
On Friday, Justice N. Senthilkumar of the Madras High Court also dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of TVK district secretary N. Sathish Kumar. He too had sought bail in connection with the Karur stampede case.
The judge questioned why TVK failed to control the huge crowd. He also noted the unruly behaviour of the party cadre, including rampage and damage caused to public property during Vijay’s roadshow.
