Two successive earthquakes, the strongest measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale, struck Manipur on Wednesday, sending tremors across the northeastern region, officials confirmed.
According to the Regional Seismological Centre in Shillong, the 5.7 magnitude earthquake occurred at 11:06 a.m., with its epicentre located 44 km east of Yairipok in Imphal East district at a depth of 110 km.
Tremors were felt in Assam, Meghalaya, and several other parts of the Northeast, triggering concerns among residents.
According to the National Center for Seismology, a second earthquake measuring 4.1 on the Richter scale was recorded in Manipur's Kamjong district at 12:20:43 IST. The tremor occurred at a depth of 66 km beneath the surface. Authorities are monitoring the situation, though no immediate reports of damage or casualties have been received.

A second tremor, measuring 4.1 magnitude, followed at 12:20 p.m., its epicentre situated in Kamjong district at a depth of 66 km, the officials added.
Cracks have appeared in multiple buildings in Manipur due to the tremors, with social media visuals showing visible damage at a school building in Wangjing Lamding in Thoubal district, where a relief camp for those affected by the state’s ongoing ethnic strife is being operated.
“We are confirming the reports of the damage,” an official in Imphal stated. However, no casualties or major damage have been reported so far from other states in the region.
