The Central Bureau of Investigation on Thursday arrested former judge Giribala Singh from her residence in Bhopal in connection with the death of 33-year-old Twisha Sharma, days after the case triggered national outrage.
The arrest came a day after the Madhya Pradesh High Court cancelled Singh’s anticipatory bail in the dowry death case.
CBI officials reached Giribala Singh’s residence in the Bag Mughaliya Extension area of Bhopal on Thursday morning and questioned her following the High Court order before taking her into custody, sources said.
Twisha Sharma was found dead at her matrimonial home in Bhopal on May 12, barely five months after her marriage to lawyer Samarth Singh, the son of Giribala Singh.
Investigators said Twisha allegedly died by hanging inside the house, though the circumstances surrounding her death led to widespread public scrutiny after her family accused her husband and in-laws of dowry harassment and mental torture.
Earlier this week, Samarth Singh was arrested by Bhopal Police from the Jabalpur district court premises after remaining absconding for nearly 10 days. A Bhopal court subsequently sent him to seven-day police custody for interrogation.
Officials said investigators are examining digital evidence, including WhatsApp chats, phone records and other electronic data, as part of the ongoing probe.
During court proceedings, Twisha’s family alleged that she was subjected to sustained mental harassment after marriage and had repeatedly expressed distress to her relatives.
Lawyers representing the family referred to WhatsApp conversations in which Twisha allegedly described feeling “suffocated” and wanting to leave her matrimonial home.
The family has also accused the in-laws of attempting to influence evidence after her death and questioned the delay in registration of the FIR.
The case has sparked intense debate over dowry-related harassment, custodial influence and accountability, particularly because Giribala Singh is a former judicial officer.
The CBI took over the investigation amid mounting public pressure and demands for an impartial probe into the circumstances surrounding Twisha Sharma’s death.
