The Counter Intelligence wing of Punjab Police in Amritsar has busted a cross-border arms smuggling racket and arrested two men. Police also seized 10 foreign-made pistols from their possession, a senior officer said on Friday.
The arrested accused have been identified as Resham Singh of Khusupura village in Amritsar, and Manpreet Singh of Khwaspur village in Tarn Taran district, Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said.
The recovered weapons include one Turkey-made Zigana pistol, one Austria-made Glock pistol, two US-made Beretta pistols, five PX5 pistols and one China-made Norinco pistol, the DGP said in an official statement.
Police have also impounded a motorcycle that was allegedly being used by the accused to transport the illegal arms consignments, the officer added.
The DGP said initial inquiry revealed that the accused were working on the instructions of a foreign-based gangster. They were coordinating with Pakistan-based smugglers to bring illegal weapons into India. The arms consignment was meant to be supplied to criminals operating across Punjab, he said.
The DGP further said the Counter Intelligence wing had received specific information about a foreign-based gangster running an illegal arms smuggling network. The weapons and ammunition were allegedly being sent from Pakistan into India using drones with the help of local associates.
Police also got a specific information that Resham Singh had received a weapons consignment and was on his way to deliver it to Manpreet Singh near Kohali village on the Amritsar–Chogawan road, Gaurav Yadav said.
Acting swiftly on the information, police teams set up a checkpoint, intercepted the accused and arrested both men. The foreign-made pistols were recovered during the operation. The accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act, the DGP added.
