Two individuals, suspected of being narcotics smugglers, were arrested and approximately 5.5 kilograms of heroin were seized from their custody near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Rajouri district, officials said on Monday.
The seizure of a huge quantity of heroin, worth crores of rupees in the international market, from the Nowshera sector thwarted an attempt by the drug dealers to smuggle illegal contraband from across the border, they added.
The two accused were arrested during a joint operation conducted by the security forces and Jammu and Kashmir police in the forward villages of Sher and Kaneti late on Sunday evening.
The accused, identified as Sajan Kumar (25) and Subash Chander (36), were subsequently charged under the relevant sections of the law.
Earlier on Sunday, the Border Security Force (BSF) recovered a Pakistani drone loaded with high-quality drugs along the international border in the Arnia sector of Jammu on Saturday.
During a recent press conference, the IG of BSF told reporters that vigil troops serving in the toughest terrain of the country had shot down and plugged all infiltration routes along the international border and Line of Control.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that the BSF had shot down around 300 Pakistani drones until November 2024.
"This, according to the IG, was achieved by the deployment of two additional battalions and the high-quality anti-drone systems used by the security forces. With the infusion of the latest technology, drone infiltration attempts along the IB have gone to zero in recent times," he said.
