Following the deployment of 3,000 Army personnel, 2,000 Border Security Force members, and 500 commandos, the central government has moved two Assam Rifles battalions to Jammu to strengthen the counter-militancy grid and enhance operations against foreign terrorists in the region.

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to deploy two battalions of Assam Rifles, comprising approximately 2,000 personnel, in the Jammu region.

This decision comes in response to a surge in terror attacks and intelligence reports suggesting that over 50 foreign terrorists might be hiding in the forests of Doda, Udhampur, Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, and Kathua districts.

“Two thousand personnel of Assam Rifles are being relocated from the conflict-ridden Manipur to the Jammu region. These battalions were previously stationed in Manipur, which has seen significant violence, and they are now being redirected to Jammu,” official sources told reporters.

Previously, the Assam Rifles were part of the security arrangements for the annual Shri Amarnath Ji yatra in Jammu and Kashmir.

Their new role will involve being part of the security grid and actively engaging in anti-terror operations, which are being intensified in the Jammu region by multiple security agencies, including the Army, paramilitary forces, and Jammu and Kashmir Police (JKP).

“Adding nearly 2,000 jawans of Assam Rifles to the Jammu region will further strengthen the security grid and help security forces confront terrorists hiding in jungles and hills, including some natural cave hideouts,” the sources said.

Recently, the Ministry of Home Affairs airlifted 2,000 BSF jawans from Odisha for deployment along the International Border in Jammu, Samba, and Kathua districts due to suspicions that some Pakistani terrorists had infiltrated through these areas and neighbouring Punjab. Before this, 3,000 additional Army personnel were deployed to intensify operations against terrorists.

Jammu is experiencing its worst surge in terrorism since 2006 when the region was declared a terror-free zone. This resurgence has made Jammu a focal point for the government.
