Two children died after a private school bus collided with a two-wheeler near the Thanisandra police quarters, police said.
The accident occurred around 8:16 am when a school bus allegedly attempted a U-turn and struck a scooter coming from the opposite direction. The victims, identified as Varsha (2) and Bhanu (4), sustained severe head injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they were declared dead.
According to police, Naganagowda, a constable with the Armed Reserve Force, was riding the scooter to buy milk, accompanied by his daughter Varsha and his nephew Bhanu. The children were seated in front of the vehicle at the time of the incident.
Speaking about the accident, Naganagowda alleged that he had stopped his scooter after noticing the bus.
“Without paying attention, the bus hit the two-wheeler and ran over the children who had fallen. Before the incident, the driver had hit an auto in the middle of the road. The mishap occurred because the driver was driving too fast,” he said.
The school bus driver, identified as Mareppan, has been arrested and is being questioned. Police have registered a case under charges of reckless and negligent driving.
The bodies of the children have been sent to Yelahanka Government Hospital for post-mortem examination.
The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed near the spot. The Hennur Traffic Police have launched a detailed investigation to determine the exact sequence of events.
