At least two people died while five others sustained injuries in an explosion that took place at a firecracker factory in Lucknow on Sunday.
The blast affected a house in the same compound, leaving the house owner Alam and his wife, Munni, dead, and five others injured.
Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) in charge, Hanuman Prasad, said that the high intensity of the blast was due to the large quantity of explosive being produced in the factory.
“The blast was huge, which was caused by the large quantity of explosives being produced in the factory… The large quantity of explosives being produced here was the reason of the severe explosion.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Anindya Vikaram Singh said, "The blast occurred in a house where the cracker factory was operating from. Two persons have been killed in the incident, and some are injured."
A part of the roof collapsed following the explosion, trapping five individuals under the debris. The five were rescued from the rubble and rushed to a hospital. District Magistrate Vishak G, who visited the site with other senior police officials, said, "Condition of two of the injured remains critical. The remaining three injured are stable."
The force of the blast was so strong that it also affected neighbouring houses. "At least four other houses beside the one in which the blast occurred have been damaged," the DM confirmed.
He further said, "First, our priority is to provide proper medical attention to the injured. Once that is ensured, then our teams would investigate the cause of the accident and the people who were involved in it."
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath offered his condolences to the families of the victims and directed officials to reach the spot at once to expedite relief and rescue operations.
