Two people died after a fire broke out in a multi-storey building in Sector 66, Noida, in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday. According to DCP Central Noida, the fire was triggered by an electric scooter (EV) that was plugged in for charging. It later spread to several other vehicles parked nearby.
According to Joint Commissioner of police Rajiv Mishra, initial investigations indicated that the blaze was triggered by an electric two-wheeler that was being charged on the premises. The fire quickly intensified after spreading to nearby petrol-powered scooters and motorcycles parked inside the building.
Emergency services deployed multiple fire tenders and a hydraulic platform to evacuate the building's residents, most of whom were tenants living in the ground-plus-four-storey structure. Nearly 50 residents were rescued, while the landlord has been arrested.
While the majority were safely evacuated, police confirmed two individuals—both of whom had pre-existing health complications —succumbed after inhaling heavy smoke. They were rushed to the district hospital via ambulance and were declared dead by the doctors. An investigation into structural safety and negligence is underway.
