Two employees of a private bank tragically died after their SUV got submerged in floodwaters at the Old Faridabad Railway underpass late Friday night.
The victims, Punyashray Sharma (48) and Viraj Dwivedi (26), were heading home to Greater Faridabad from Gurugram when they ignored warnings and drove into the inundated underpass.
Police said Punyashreya Sharma, who was the manager of HDFC Bank's branch in Gurugram's Sector 31 and Viraj Dwivedi, who was a cashier there, were returning home to Faridabad in a Mahindra XUV700 on Friday evening.
Police said that continuous rainfall throughout Friday had flooded the underpass, with authorities advising cars to avoid the area.
"Around 11:50 p.m., the XUV 700 entered the deep waters and got stuck," a police offical noted.
Passers-by tried to rescue the men, managing to pull them from the vehicle, but Viraj was declared dead at the scene.
Sharma was rushed to Badshah Khan Civil Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Inspector Samer Singh, SHO of the NIT Faridabad police station, said, "Their families have been informed. We will hand over the bodies to the next of kin after post-mortem examinations."
