The Congress party’s Jammu and Kashmir unit may get a shot in the arm after two of its former ministers are set to return to the Congress on Friday, sources said.
Reports indicate the two former ministers, Taj Mohiuddin and Ghulam Mohammad Saroori, are set to return to the party on Friday.
Both the leaders had resigned after former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad also parted ways and launched a party named the “Democratic Progressive Azad Party”.
Although both the leaders had a short stay with the party before announcing to contest as independents in the 2024 assembly elections held after 10 years in the UT.
The development comes at a time when other prominent political figures, including Choudhary Guzlar Khatana and Muhammad Amin Bhat, announced their return to the grand old party.
As the Congress is slowly regaining its foothold in the country, its Jammu and Kashmir unit is also witnessing a resurgence, especially in south Kashmir, where the current ruling dispensation, the National Conference, secured 10 out of 16 seats in the 2024 elections.
In the 2024 assembly elections, the INC won 6 seats, while its coalition partner, the National Conference, won 42 seats.
The Congress party also secured around a 12 per cent vote share in the 2024 assembly elections.
