Itanagar police have apprehended two individuals from Jammu and Kashmir on alleged espionage charges in Arunachal Pradesh, officials said on Tuesday.
Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Chukhu Apa said the two residents of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district were arrested on December 18 and have since been brought to the state, where they remain in police custody.
The arrested individuals were identified by the authorities as Aijaz Ahmed Bhat and Bashir Ahmad Ganai.
The IGP also said that a third person detained in connection with espionage activities in the region was released after investigators found no evidence linking him to the suspicious activities in the state.
Police alleged that the apprehended individuals were involved in collecting sensitive information from different parts of Arunachal Pradesh and sharing it with Pakistan-based handlers.
This is the second such incident reported in recent weeks. On November 21, the police arrested Nazir Ahmad Malik and Sabir Ahmed Mir, both residents of Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir, following specific intelligence inputs about their suspected involvement in spying activities.
Malik was arrested from Ganga village in Itanagar, and based on information provided by him, police later arrested his associate Mir from Abotani Colony in the state capital.
“We were working on credible information about a spy ring operating out of Arunachal Pradesh. Under the leadership of Itanagar SP Jummar Basar, the team worked diligently and made these arrests. Two persons have been arrested from Kupwara and three from different locations in the Itanagar Capital Region,” Apa said.
“I appeal to the people of Arunachal Pradesh to carry out police verification before allowing anyone to stay on your property for safety reasons. Do not allow people to stay in your house without proper verification,” he added.
