Two men have been arrested in Punjab for allegedly spying for Pakistan. The Punjab Police say the duo shared sensitive details about military areas in Amritsar.
According to Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav, the two men — Palak Sher Masih and Suraj Masih — were taken into custody on 3 May. The arrests were made during a counter-espionage operation by Amritsar Rural Police.
Police said the accused had leaked photos and details of Army cantonment zones and air force bases to Pakistani handlers. The information was sent through mobile phones.
Officers also recovered several images of sensitive locations. Pakistani phone numbers were found on the suspects’ devices.
Investigators believe the men were paid between ₹5,000 and ₹10,000 for each piece of information they shared.
The police further revealed a link to Harpreet Singh, also known as Pittu or Happy. He is currently lodged in Amritsar Central Jail. The accused reportedly came into contact with Pakistani agents through him.
The arrests come in the wake of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. Police say the two men became more active following that incident.
On 22 April, gunmen believed to be from Pakistan killed 26 people in the Bairsan Valley of Pahalgam. Most victims were tourists. Security forces have launched a manhunt to track the attackers.
The Indian government has responded strongly. Measures include the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, cancelling visas, and cutting trade ties. Diplomatic missions are being downsized, and land and air routes have been shut.
Officials say India remains on high alert. They have accused Pakistan of aiding cross-border terrorism.
The investigation into the alleged spy case in Punjab is ongoing. Authorities say more arrests are made.
