The Jammu and Kashmir Police have arrested two journalists from Sopore town in North Kashmir’s Baramulla district for allegedly spreading false news.

According to a police spokesperson, journalists Mueeb ul Haq from Sopore and Suhail Khan from Delina Baramulla were accused of misrepresenting a hit-and-run case as a murder incident in their social media reports.

“This false reporting rapidly spread across the Sopore area and had the potential to incite law and order issues. It hurt public sentiments and raised unwarranted questions against the investigating agency,” the spokesperson said.

An FIR (No. 238/2024) has been registered at Sopore Police Station under relevant sections of the law. Both accused journalists have been arrested in connection with the case.

The incident relates to a hit-and-run accident on November 5 in which Dr Azhar Janwari was injured.

The victim succumbed to his injuries on November 18 at SKIMS hospital.

The accused, identified as Nadeem Badam of Sopore, was traced and confessed to the crime during interrogation, the police said.

The Sopore Police urged the media and the public to refrain from sharing unverified information that could mislead the masses and hinder ongoing investigations.
