At least two people were killed and three others seriously injured after a herd of wild elephants went on a rampage in a village in Jharkhand’s Seraikela-Kharsawan district, officials and local residents said on Sunday.

The incident took place late night in Harat village under the Ichagarh police station area, where elephants suddenly entered the settlement, damaging several houses and attacking residents. The sudden intrusion triggered panic, leaving villagers with little time to react.

The deceased have been identified as China Devi and Amita Kumari, both of whom died on the spot due to the attack. Three others —Kamalchand Mahto, Mohan Mahto and Satula Devi — sustained serious injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment.

Eyewitnesses said the herd stormed into the village without warning, leading to chaos and fear among residents. Many villagers fled their homes in the dark to save their lives as the elephants caused widespread destruction.

The incident has left the entire area gripped by fear, with residents forced to stay awake through the night to guard against further attacks. Villagers expressed anger over the delayed response of the forest department, alleging that no team had reached the spot till the time of reporting.

Human-elephant conflict remains a recurring issue in several parts of Jharkhand, often resulting in casualties and damage to property and crops. Locals have demanded immediate intervention by authorities to control the situation and ensure safety in the affected areas.

Residents have also urged the administration to provide adequate compensation to the victims’ families and take long-term measures to prevent such incidents in the future.
