Two second-year MBBS students of Gajra Raja Medical College drowned in Tigra Dam in Madhya Pradesh’s Gwalior district, police said on Sunday. Their bodies were recovered after an intensive search operation that lasted nearly 15 hours.

The deceased have been identified as Gopal Agarwal, a resident of Bina in Sagar district, and Ayush Srivastava from Muzaffarpur in Bihar.

According to police, a group of eight MBBS students, including four female students, had gone to Tigra Dam for a picnic on Saturday. The group entered the water near the ‘Kachchi Paar’ area, located about three kilometres from the Boat Club.

During the outing, Gopal and Ayush reportedly lost their balance and slipped into deep water. When they did not resurface for a while, their friends raised an alarm and informed the police.

A rescue operation was immediately launched with the assistance of the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), local swimmers, and police personnel. Gopal’s body was recovered around midnight, while search efforts for Ayush continued through the night.

Senior police officials, including Superintendent of Police Krishnapal Singh, reached the site to oversee the operation. Ayush’s body was finally located and retrieved on Sunday afternoon.

“All the students were in a restricted area. A search and rescue operation was launched as soon as we received information,” Singh said, adding that the families of both students have been informed.

Police said Gopal’s post-mortem was conducted on Sunday morning after his family arrived. Ayush’s body was found lodged between rocks and bushes at a depth of approximately 50–55 feet and was retrieved with the help of divers.

His body has been sent to Jayarogya Hospital for autopsy, officials added.

Authorities have cautioned visitors against entering restricted zones around water bodies, particularly during monsoon-related fluctuations in water levels.
