The flood situation in Tripura has shown signs of improvement with the cessation of rains, though two more deaths were reported on Friday, bringing the total toll to 24 since the onset of the deluge and landslides earlier this week.

Disaster Management Secretary Brijesh Pandey reported that while the overall flood scenario has improved in the past 24 hours, the Gomati River continues to flow above the danger mark at Sonamura in Sepahijala district.

The heavy rainfall has inflicted severe damage across the state, affecting roads, power infrastructure, agriculture, and livestock, with losses estimated at approximately Rs 5,000 crore.

Currently, 1,28,000 individuals are taking refuge in 558 relief camps. With road connectivity still compromised, food packets are being airlifted to the flood-affected areas of Amarpur and Karbook subdivisions in Gomati district.

Chief Minister Manik Saha conducted an aerial survey of South Tripura and Gomati districts to assess the damage and visited some relief camps to interact with displaced residents.

Two individuals who went missing during the floods remain unaccounted for. The meteorological office has predicted medium to heavy rainfall for Saturday, prompting authorities to prepare for any further challenges.

"We urge residents to stay alert and follow the weather updates. The government is prepared to handle any situation," Pandey said.

Public Works Department (PWD) Secretary Kiran Gitte reported extensive damage to roads, including major cracks on NH-8 at Mugiakami in Khowai district, which has led to suspended vehicular movement and traffic diversions.

Restoration work is underway and is expected to be completed within 48 hours. Road connectivity has largely been restored in most subdivisions, with repair work continuing in Karbook and Amarpur subdivisions.

Additionally, Gitte, who also serves as Health Secretary, advised government doctors to remain on duty for the next three days to combat potential outbreaks of water-borne diseases.
