At least two Punjab police personnel have been shot dead while on duty at a checkpost near the border with Pakistan, officials said on Sunday.
Officials said the two officers, identified as Ashok Kumar and Gurnam Singh—one an assistant sub-inspector and the other a head constable—succumbed to injuries inflicted by gunshots at the check post in Adiyan village under the Dorangla police station in Gurdaspur district.
It remains to be seen whether the two police personnel engaged each other or if anyone else shot them. The incident, however, has triggered panic in nearby localities.
According to officials, the bodies of the two policemen were discovered at the checkpost following reports of firing.
Check posts in the area are critical and often serve as the second parameter of defence. The bodies were quickly shifted to Gurdaspur Civil Hospital for post-mortem examination.
Though there has been no confirmation about what took place or how the incident unfolded.
Aditya, Senior Superintendent of Police, Gurdaspur, rushed to the site to supervise the investigation.
Officials said that local police have cordoned off the area, and teams from the forensic science department have begun their work.
The investigation is underway; however, police have not issued any formal statement regarding the mysterious deaths.
