At least two youths from Punjab have been arrested in Canada and charged with Criminal Code offences after the Surrey Police Service investigated a shooting incident linked to extortion threats.
According to investigators, the incident occurred on April 22 at around 12:40 am when frontline officers responded to reports of gunfire at a home in the 13400 block of 87A Avenue.
The probe confirmed damage to the residence and a vehicle, but no injuries were reported.
The Extortion Response Team took over the investigation, identified a suspect vehicle, and later executed searches at residences linked to the crime.
The arrested individuals — Damanjeet Singh (22) and Pardaman Singh (30) — are facing charges related to firing shots into a residence using illegally possessed weapons.
Both men have been remanded in custody and are scheduled to appear in court on May 19 and June 1, respectively.
Surrey Police confirmed that the duo are foreign nationals, and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) has also been notified.
Investigators have released photographs of both accused, stating that public disclosure was necessary to assist the investigation as police seek further information about the two men.
According to Canadian authorities, young Indian nationals studying in Canada are increasingly being used as foot soldiers by gangs targeting South Asian diaspora communities.
The Bishnoi Gang and its rival Bambiha Gang have been linked to several such crimes.
It may be noted that the Bishnoi Gang was officially designated as a listed terrorist entity after investigations linked it to violent crimes in Canada.
