Two sharpshooters with links to a foreign-based gangster were apprehended by Counter Intelligence and Ludhiana Police in a joint operation, officials said on Monday. The accused were reportedly planning to carry out several criminal activities in Punjab and Haryana.
During a media briefing, Police Commissioner Ludhiana Swapn Sharma said that Counter Intelligence and Ludhiana Police carried out a joint operation and apprehended two armed sharpshooters. He said the accused were planning to execute five major criminal incidents in different parts of Punjab and Haryana.
He added that the accused were working under instructions from a foreign-based gangster. The gangster, named Lakha, has earlier been involved in several criminal cases in Punjab, he said.
The arrested accused have been identified as Ankush and Gaurav. Both are residents of the Phillaur area.
Police said weapons were seized from their possession during the operation. The Commissioner confirmed that three weapons were seized from the accused.
Police also said further interrogation is expected to reveal important details about the network.
In a separate incident on Sunday, Punjab Police carried out a major crackdown on transnational cybercrime in Ludhiana. Police busted a large international cyber fraud module that targeted people across North America, Canada and several other countries, cheating them of crores of rupees, officials said.
So far, 140 accused have been named in the case, out of which 136 have already been arrested. A large quantity of electronic devices and cash has also been recovered.
