Two young girls tragically lost their lives, and a third was critically injured after their hut caught fire in Madhya Pradesh's Damoh district on Wednesday, officials reported.
Damoh District Magistrate Sudhir Kochar said, the tragic incident occurred when the victim's family was boiling potatoes inside the hut when a fire broke out, burning the three girls - Jahnvi (3), Kirti (2) and Malti (6 months). Two died of severe burns, while the third is seriously injured and has been put on oxygen support.
“Govind Adivasi and his family, who worked as labourers guarding crops on the land of Khilan Singh Rajput, lived in the hut. The children were playing inside when the fire started. The eldest daughter was the first to catch fire, and her younger sisters, in an attempt to save her, were also caught in the flames,” DM Kochar said.
Jhanvi and Kirti succumbed to their injuries, suffering nearly 100% burns. Malti, also critically burned, remains on oxygen support.
Dr Chakresh Kumar, RMO at Damoh District Hospital, stated: “Three children were brought in; two were already deceased. The surviving child is in a severe condition and will be referred to a higher medical centre. All three suffered 100% burns. The cause
of the fire remains unclear.”
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has expressed his sorrow over the tragedy and announced compensation of ₹2 lakh each for the deceased and ₹1 lakh for the injured child.
