Two brothers from Pithoragarh, Anand Singh Karki and Bhupendra Singh Karki, have returned home safely after being stranded in Russia for nearly 97 days. Their return followed intervention by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and sustained efforts by the Uttarakhand government.
After the brothers reached home, Dhami spoke to them over the phone and asked about their health and well-being. He also spoke with their family to understand what they had gone through. The family expressed relief and thanked the Chief Minister for his prompt intervention.
According to available information, the brothers were promised better job opportunities in Russia through a travel agency based in Sitarganj. Their family alleged that around Rs 8 lakh was taken from them for arranging the jobs before they were sent to Russia.
The brothers left India on May 5, 2026, and reached Moscow the next day. Their family said they were not given the jobs they had been promised. Instead, they were allegedly forced to do other work and were not paid.
The family also alleged that the brothers were restricted from moving freely and were threatened when they refused to work. Their limited contact with the family increased concerns about their safety. During their last communication, they reportedly mentioned drone or missile attacks near the place where they were being kept.
After learning about the situation, Dhami directed officials to take immediate steps to bring the two brothers back safely. State officials then coordinated with the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian Embassy in Russia to speed up the repatriation process.
Following continued coordination and efforts, both brothers were brought back to India safely. Their return came after nearly 97 days of uncertainty and concern for their family.
Dhami said the Uttarakhand government would do everything possible to help any resident facing trouble abroad. He said the safety and dignity of the state’s people remain a priority. The government, he added, works with the Centre, the Ministry of External Affairs and Indian missions abroad in such situations.
Senior UKD leader Kashi Singh Airi and social worker Ramdev Verma also stayed in touch with the family during the efforts. They supported the family and coordinated with government officials during the process.
After the brothers returned home, their family thanked Chief Minister Dhami, the Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian Embassy, state officials and everyone involved in helping bring the two youths back safely.
