In an extensive security operation, two suspected militants of the banned outfit United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I) were arrested from Jagun near the Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border in Tinsukia district late on Friday night, police said. The operation was carried out jointly by Tinsukia Police with assistance from central security agencies, following specific intelligence inputs.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Humenjyoti Baruah alias Siyor Asom (27), a resident of Panitola, and Papu Moran alias Manoj Asom (30), from Baghjan. According to police, both are self-styled second lieutenants of the proscribed outfit.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the duo had allegedly infiltrated Assam from Myanmar via Jairampur in Arunachal Pradesh before proceeding towards Tinsukia.
Security forces recovered two AK-56 rifles, 172 rounds of ammunition, two hand grenades, emergency medicines, food supplies meant for prolonged jungle stay, and several incriminating documents from their possession.
“Both individuals are being thoroughly interrogated to gather further details about their background and links with the organisation,” a police official stated.
Officials added that initial findings suggest the duo had been tasked by ULFA(I) to carry out an indiscriminate attack targeting civilians in Tinsukia town, with the intent to create fear and panic among the public. Authorities also suspect that the planning and operational pattern may indicate the involvement or influence of external elements attempting to destabilise the region.
The accused have been brought to Tinsukia for detailed interrogation to uncover the broader conspiracy, including possible local support networks and logistical arrangements.
A case has been registered in connection with the seizure of arms and explosives. Further investigations are underway to identify other individuals linked to the alleged plot, police said.
