The authorities in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday allowed traffic to ply on both sides of the 270-kilometre Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH44).
In an advisory issued by the traffic department, “TCU Jammu/Srinagar shall liaise with TCU Ramban regarding road conditions. Commuters are requested to check NH 44 status at J & K Traffic Police.”
It said in case of better weather and good road conditions, security forces vehicles shall be allowed from both sides on the Srinagar-Jammu highway, towards the summer capital, and vice versa.
The spokesperson informed reporters that during the past 24 hours, there was slow movement of traffic observed due to a single lane at Dalwas, Mehad, and between Marog and Kishtwari Pather and slippery conditions on the road between Banihal and Levdora.
He said, “Those vehicles (LMVs, s/HMVs) that were stuck in between Qazigund and Nashri tunnel due to intense snowfall on Friday were allowed to proceed towards their destination.”
The Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag road is still closed due to snow accumulation.
Meanwhile, on the Srinagar Leh Highway, after getting a signal from the road maintenance agencies, only one side of the traffic for LMVs with anti-skid chains from Srinagar towards Kargil shall be allowed on the Srinagar-Gulmarg road. These vehicles will be allowed from Sonamarg towards Kargil between 10: AM and 3: PM.
“No vehicle shall be allowed after cut-off timing. Motorists are advised to carry an anti-skid chain to gain more grip on the slippery road.
SFs Convoy, plying from Srinagar to Kargil, shall plan their movement in such a manner so that civil traffic doesn’t get disturbed,” it said.
The Mughal Road is still closed due to snow accumulation.
